Stray
animals in Margarita Roaming in the streets, on beaches, through
garbage dumps. Everywhere. Hungry, ill, abused.
The beauty of this paradise Island and the gentleness of its climate is
a painful contrast to the harsh life these animals must endure.
The tropical weather aids in the rapid spread of infections and
diseases amongst animals. Ehrlichiosis (a life endangering
illness produced by ticks) affects most of Margarita's stray
dogs. Furthermore, most of them are affected by mange, heartworm,
fungus and other parasites.
Periodic mass poisoning of beach dogs is the local response to animal
over-population. Long agony with convulsions, vomiting of
fluids and blood, unbearable suffering.
Health officials claim that they don't have the financial means for humane methods of animal control (...).
How to achieve the political will to end these atrocious "cleansing"
jobs? Through mass spaying! Please, protest here to the poisoning
of beach dogs in Margarita.
In spite of the high death rate of homeless animals, their population is ever increasing.
Public concern for the fate of these animals is
virtually non-existent. Ill, "ugly-looking"
family pets are often kicked out
of their homes, thus constantly increasing the
population of homeless animals. Margarita Island has
approximately 30.000 strays or "family dogs" who live on the streets.
AAMOR has rescued over 2,500 strays. But
thousands are still
waiting for help... AAMOR is a non- profit organization founded
in1995.We have rescued over 2,500 homeless dogs and cats
and spayed/ neutered 1,800. Many of them now enjoy happy
new lives in North America and Europe. Our shelterr
hosts an average of 50 dogs and 40 cats.
Since we are unable to host all animals in need and local
acceptable adoptions are rare, we have a program of rescue/ spay/
release for healthy animals living in friendly environments who
are fed and cared for by neighbors or tourists. Not the ideal
"pampered pet " adoption, but it allows us to preserve lives...
